Small Company Anniversary Speech

PETER GABRIEL

Peter Gabriel ( Chobham, Surrey , England, 1950) was the son of Gabriel Ralph Parton, an electrical engineer who participated in the development of technology in fiber optics, and Edith Irene Allen, who the family musical tradition, took him from small to take clarinet lessons. He entered the House Cable, a private elementary school in Woking , Surrey . Later enter into the Charterhouse School ( Godalming ) in 1963. which definitely change your life, when he founded the band Genesis with peers Tony Banks, Anthony Philips , Mike Rutherford and Chris Stewart . The band name was suggested by his friend and pupil of Charterhouse , the music industry entrepreneur Jonathan King, who produced his first album From Genesis to Revelation . Genesis

were known in England and eventually also in Italy , Belgium , Germany and other European countries, largely due to the presence on the stage of exuberant Gabriel that involved numerous bizarre costume changes and comical, dreamlike stories to introduce each song (originally Gabriel developed these stories just to cover the time between songs for the rest of the band tuning their instruments and deal with technical problems). At concerts made extensive use of black light with the normal stage lighting subdued or off. A fluorescent backdrop of white sheets and a relatively austere setting gave a picture of the band as a set of silhouettes, with Gabriel fluorescent costume and makeup providing the only light sources to the group.

In a documentary by Australian relevisión ( The seven ages of rock ), Steve Hackett called the first appearance on stage Gabriel as 'costumes'. He left with a dress and a fox's head, immortalized on the cover of Foxtrot. Hackett and the rest of the band had no idea that Gabriel going to do this, and at that time Hackett was very worried because it would ruin the performance. However, it was a success, encouraging Gabriel to continue wearing costumes while singing. Among the famous

costumes Gabriel, who helped to visualize the band's musical ideas and to promote them to the press, were Batwing for the traditional opening song of their concerts, Watcher Of The Skies , The Flower and Magog to Supper's ready album Foxtrot , Britannia to Dancing with the moonlit knight , The Reverend to The battle of Epping Forest , album Selling England by the pound , The Old Man for The musical box of Nursery Cryme and The Slipperman and Rael to The colony of slippermen in Rael which was the album's protagonist The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway .

The backing vocals for Gabriel stage in Genesis usually ran by the bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks and guitarist , and less frequently, drummer Phil Collins , who eventually would be the lead singer after Gabriel output in 1975.

output of Gabriel Genesis , who surprised the fans of the group and left many doubts about whether the band could survive, was the result of a number of factors. His growth as a singer band, and the more attention he got for his flamboyant personality, led to tensions within the band. Genesis had always operated more or less as a collective, and the growing public profile Gabriel did consider the group was being unfairly singled out as the creative center, and also the band had begun to feel limited by reputation (and the expectations of the fans) together with his famous and elaborate performances.

The tensions were aggravated by the ambitious album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and promotional tour, a piece created by Gabriel concept that led him to assume lion's share of lyric writing. During the writing and recording The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway , Gabriel was tempted by the director William Friedkin , allegedly because Friedkin had found some interesting notes on Gabriel Genesis Live . Gabriel's interest in a film project with Friedkin was another factor that contributed to his decision to leave Genesis , it took before the tour in support of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway , but Gabriel stayed with the band until the end of it. Although Tensions were high, both Gabriel as other members of Genesis have publicly stated that Gabriel left the band on good terms, supported by the fact that officially left eight months after telling his colleagues that it was time to continue their own way forward.

The climax came with the difficult pregnancy of Gabriel wife, Jill , and the subsequent birth of her first daughter, Anna . When elected to stay with his sick daughter and his wife, rather than to record and tour, the resentment of the rest of the band led Gabriel to conclude had to leave the group. Solsbury Hill first solo single Gabriel was an autobiographical song that expresses his feelings on leaving Genesis . The song also entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978, reaching the Top 70 , but was recorded in 1976 and appeared on the album Car in 1977. In 1982, Gabriel met with former colleagues Genesis concert for Six of The Best .

Gabriel refused to title their first four albums, which were all titled Peter Gabriel using the same font, but had different designs of the covers (made by Hipgnosis ), characterized by the fact that the face appears Gabriel wholly or partially obscured in some way. They are usually differentiated by the number of order of publication ( 1 , 2, 3 , 4), or the cover design, known to fans for the first three solo albums often as Car , Scratch and Melt , respectively, in reference to its cover. His fourth solo album, also called Peter Gabriel was entitled Security in U.S. at the behest of Geffen Records . After consent

distinctive titles, Gabriel uses a series of two-letter words for the title of his next three albums: So , and Us Up . His latest greatest hits compilation is titled Hit , and the pack of two CDs, a disc is labeled Hit and Miss other label.

Gabriel recorded their first album Peter Gabriel 1 in 1976 and 1977 with producer Bob Ezrin . His first success came from the hand of single Solsbury Hill, which was metaphorically on his departure from Genesis . Although considered to be satisfied with the music, Gabriel felt the album, especially the issue Here comes the flood was overproduced. Less ornate versions of the song can be heard on the album Exposure of Robert Fripp, and the greatest hits collection Gabriel, Shaking the tree (1990).

Gabriel worked with guitarist Robert Fripp as producer on their second album Peter Gabriel 2 in 1978. This album was leaner, stronger and denser, but more experimental, darker and less cool, and got good reviews, but not outstanding achievements in the lists. It was recorded in New York and Hilvarenkeen , Netherlands, and was released in November 1977.

Gabriel developed a new interest in world music (especially percussion), and for production what he did investigate the widespread use of recording tricks and sound effects. Gabriel's interest in music technology is considered by many to be the spark of his success, which inspired his third album, Peter Gabriel 3 , which is often credited as the first to use the famous "gated drum" sound. Collins played drums on several songs, including the first cut, Intruder, which had the reverse-gated, a powerful drum sound Collins also used in single In the air tonight and for the rest of the 1980's. Gabriel had requested that their batteries do not use cymbals in the album sessions, and to hear the result Collins asked play a simple pattern for several minutes, and then built Intruder about this sound. The album achieved chart success with songs Games without frontiers (No. 4 in UK, and U.S. 48 in ) I do not remember Biko and . The Atlantic seal dismissed distribute their third album in the U.S. , because they considered him too sentimental and could be a commercial suicide. Then spoke the Mercury Records label with Steve Lillywhite production , who put the disc into the Top 20 .

In 1981 and 1982, an arduous recording with his co-producer and engineer David Lord , and occasionally in the humid environment of their English country estate, resulted in the publication of his fourth album Peter Gabriel 4 , in which Gabriel was more responsible in production. He was one of the first albums recorded entirely commercial digital tape (using a mobile truck Sony ), and was the first and very expensive sampling equipment Fairlight CMI, which had already made their brief appearances before the previous album. Gabriel combines a variety of sampled and deconstructed sounds with inspired percussion rhythms from around the world and unusual instrumentation to create a radical new soundscape with strong emotional charge. The use of synthesizers was in the forefront of pop and the play of voices between him and Peter Hammill is fantastic.

Moreover, the cover was inscrutable designs based on video images. A Despite the peculiar sound of the album, its strange appearance, and often disturbing themes, it sold very well. The album featured his first Top 40 in U.S. , Shock the monkey and the song I Have the Touch . Music Video Shock the monkey , which showed Gabriel with white paint on the face and a monkey cage, since he clinched number 1 on MTV for 9 weeks. Geffen Records Peter forced to give her fourth album titled name in the United States ( Security, on his arrival at the new label and to differentiate their fourth album the other three).

Alternate versions of albums and 3 4 of Gabriel letters were also published in German. Peter Gabriel 3 consisted of basically the same recordings remixed with new vocals, while Security was also remixed and extended versions were made of some songs or slightly altered.

Gabriel did extensive touring each of their albums. Initially, deliberately avoided the theatrics that had defined their way through Genesis . For his second solo tour, the band appeared full with their heads shaved. In the Security tour began to introduce on the stage and accessories made dangerous stunts, distorting his face with Fresnel lenses and mirrors and unusual use of makeup. His tour of 1982-1983 tour included a section opening for David Bowie . The recordings of this tour were published with the double live album Plays .

The stage was set for the commercial and critical step of Gabriel with next studio album, which was in production for nearly three years. During the recording and production of the album also found time to develop the soundtrack of the 1984 movie of Alan Parker . Birdy, which consisted of new material as well as remixed instrumental tracks from his previous studio album.

Gabriel achieved his greatest popularity with songs from the 1986 album So, as with the giant Virgin Records, which produced three hits in the UK charts ( Sledgehammer , Big Time and Do not give up-to duet with Kate Bush -). The album also produced three Top 40 hits in U.S. , Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes (which appears in the film John Cusack, Say Anything ) and Big time and the single Red rain. Sledgehammer , reached number 4 in UK , but it was a No. 1 hit in United States, replacing Invisible touch Genesis of the position my first of the lists. ballad Do not give up was on serious problems associated with unemployment. So was co-produced by Gabriel and Daniel Lanois , also known for his work with U2 and Brian Eno .

Send Gabriel, Sledgehammer , which deals specifically with issues of sexual relations, was accompanied by a much lauded music video, which was a collaboration with director Stephen R. Johnson, Aardman Animations , and the brothers Quay . The video won numerous awards at the MTV Video Music Awards 1987 and set a new standard for art in the music video industry. The following video for the song Big time also broke new ground in music video animation and special effects. The song is a story of "what you get when you meet with much success" in the words of Gabriel . The Peter Gabriel album won two awards at the Brit Awards in 1987: Best Male British video and Best British by Sledgehammer.

Gabriel played a prominent role in supporting Amnesty International at that time, appearing on the American tour A Conspiracy of Hope and world tour in 1988, Human Rights Now!

In 1989, Gabriel published Passion, the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese film , The Last Temptation of Christ . For this work, he received his first Grammy Award in the category of Best New Age job. Also was nominated for a Golden Globe award as Best Music Original Banda Sonora . After seal his records were reissued Charisma after buying it for Virgin , and edited the compilation Shaking the tree: Sixteen Golden Greats . The album included a new song written by Gabriel and N'Dour , Shaking the tree, which was a commercial success.

Then Gabriel published Us in 1992 (co-produced again with Daniel Lanois), an album that explores the pain of his recent personal problems: his failed first marriage and the growing distance between him and his eldest daughter.

introspection Gabriel within the context of the album Us and can be glimpsed in the first single released, Digging in the dirt , whose video was directed by John Downer . Accompanied by a haunting video with Gabriel covered with snails and various plants, this song refers to psychotherapy which had taken up much of Gabriel time from the previous album. Gabriel describes their struggle to overcome her daughter in Come talk to me , whose video was directed by Matt Mahurin , which featured the vocals of Sinéad O'Connor . O'Connor also voiced Blood of Eden, video directed by Nicola Bruce and Michael Coulson third single released from the album, and once again dealing with the problems in a relationship, this After returning to the rib of Adam to find his inspiration. The result was one of the most personal albums Gabriel. Not as successful as So, reaching the number 2 position in the list of albums on both sides of the Atlantic , and having a modest impact on the charts with the singles Digging in the dirt and funky Steam, which certainly evokes to Sledgehammer. Gabriel supported the launch of the album with a world tour (with Paula Cole and Joy Askew assuming O'Connor vocal on the album) and the publication of the double CD and DVD Secret World Live in 1994. Gabriel

used an innovative approach to marketing the album So . Not wanting to appear only pictures of himself, asked the filmmakers Nichola Bruce and Michael Coulson to coordinate a marketing campaign with contemporary artists. Artists such as Helen Chadwick , Rebecca Horn, Nils Udo , Andy Goldsworthy, David Mach and Yayoi Kusama collaborated to create original covers of each of the 11 songs on the CD. Coulson Bruce and documented the process Hi-8 video. Bruce left Real World and Coulson continued the campaign, using documentary material as the basis for a promotional EPK, the long-form video All about us and interactive CD-ROM Xplora1 .

Gabriel won three Grammy , all in the music video categories. Won a Grammy by Best Music Video Short in 1993 and in 1994 videos Digging in the dirt and Steam , respectively. Gabriel also won the Grammy Best Music Video Long video by Secret World Live in 1996. He also participated in one of the best soundtracks in history, the Philadelphia film bringing the issue Lovetown .

After 5 years without releasing new material, Gabriel re-emerged with OVO , soundtrack he had composed for the live show Millennium Dome in London in 2000, and Long walk home , composed for the Australian film Rabbit-Proof Fence in early 2002. The soundtrack also received a nomination for Golden Globe to Best Original Film .

In September 2002, Gabriel released his first studio album in a decade long, Up . Completely self produced, even returned to some of the themes of his work in late 1970 and early 1980. Released three singles, but without appreciable success on the charts, in part because almost all tracks were over six minutes long, with several sections, but the album sold well worldwide, because Gabriel continued to have a base loyal fan of his nearly forty years in the music business. It was followed by a world tour with his daughter Melanie Gabriel in choirs and two concert DVDs, live Growing up (2003) and Still growing up : Live & Unwrapped (2004).

In 2003 he published the compilation album Hit a double album where the first CD looks at some of the best tracks from his discography, and the second not so well known issues delights his followers. The compilation contains the unpublished Burn you up, burn you down .

In 2008, Gabriel contributed to the soundtrack to WALL-E with several new songs with Thomas Newman, including the ending song from the movie, Down to Earth , receiving it the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media . The song was also nominated for a Golden Globe to Best Original Film Song and Academy Award to Best Original Song.

In 2010, Gabriel published Scratch my back. The album consists entirely of cover songs including material written by David Bowie , Lou Reed, The Arcade Fire , Radiohead, Regina Spektor , Neil Young and various artists more. The concept of the album is that Gabriel revisits songs from various artists and performers, in turn they adapted Gabriel Songs to be published in a future in an album titled I'll scratch tours. Scratch my back characterized in that it contains only orchestral instrumentation, no guitars, drums and electronic items are usual attributes of Gabriel records. After the album's release, Gabriel toured very brief, where he played with a full orchestra and two female backup singers, her daughter Melanie Gabriel and Norwegian singer Ane Brun .

Gabriel has worked with a relatively stable team of musicians and sound engineers during his solo career. Bassist Tony Levin , for example, has appeared in every studio album Gabriel, although he did in the Passion soundtracks and Long walk home, and has performed in all tours Gabriel solo . guitarist David Rhodes has been guitarist Gabriel regular since 1979. Before So, Jerry Marotta was favorite drummer Gabriel , both in the studio or on tour, though album So and Us and touring was replaced by Manu Katché , who in turn was replaced by Ged Lynch in some songs Up and the subsequent tour. Gabriel is known for having top-level staff from co-producers Ezrin, Fripp , Steve Lillywhite and Daniel Lanois , musicians like Natalie Merchant , L. Shankar, Trent Reznor , Youssou N'Dour, Larry Fast , Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan , Sinéad O'Connor, Kate Bush , Ane Brun , Paula Cole, John Giblin , Peter Hammill , Papa Wemba , Manu Katché , Bayete and Stewart Copeland .

also collaborated with Laurie Anderson in two versions of its composition Excellent birds, one for her 1984 album Mister Heartbreak , and a version slightly different This is called the Picture (Excellent Birds) , which appeared on cassette and CD versions of So . In 1987, the presentation of Gabriel with an award for their music videos, Anderson related an occasion in which participated in a recording session late into the night and Gabriel's voice had begun to sound a bit strange, almost dreamlike. Discovered that he had been asleep at the microphone, but had continued singing.

The song was nominated for an Academy Award and Gabriel and Newman acted in delivery Oscar the following year, with a rather different, with gray hair and had lost weight since their most recent tour several years earlier. He made a similar performance to the soundtrack of 2004 film, Shall we dance? , singing a version of The book of love of The Magnetic Fields . This same version was recently used in the final season of Scrubs series chain ABC.

Gabriel also appeared on the eponymous album Robbie Robertson singing the song Fallen angel , co-wrote with Tom Robinson two singles, and appeared on the Joni Mitchell album , Chalk mark in a rainstorm in the song My secret place. In the 80's was a pioneer in the fusion with all kinds of ethnic music and it is not unusual in matters of absolute African-inspired percussion, and winks to other cultures. Outstanding This album is Passion.

In fact the figure of Peter Gabriel is closely linked to the WOMAD festivals , and his success with the album So allowed to found the label Real World to burn discs and allowed to spread their music to authors of all places on earth.
