What Paint Can Use Inside A Microwave

KT Tunstall

KT Tunstall cultivated a classic in the tradition of Rikki Lee Jones , Carol King and Fleetwood Mac . The latest in a line of contemporary Scottish composers and singers among those Texas , Fran Healy, Teenage Fanclub and The Beta Band, KT perspective offers a rare emotionally connecting intensity through its lyrical bite and heartfelt melodies.

KT Tunstall was born in Edinburgh, Scotland of Chinese descent and mother of Scottish and Irish father, and was adopted 18 days later. His adoptive father was a lecturer of Physics the University of St Andrews , and her adoptive mother was a teacher. Tunstall grew St Andrews, a town in Fife . When I was 20, Kate met her biological mother, who told him that his biological father was a folk singer. She spent time performing in the famous Church Street in Burlington , Vermont, and also a commune in Vermont .

When asked about his nickname, "KT " in an interview before the Brit Awards made by Ken Bruce on BBC Radio 2 , said it was just an abbreviation of the initials of his name, Kate Tunstall. In an interview on XM Satellite Radio in 2006 said PJ Harvey was the inspiration for the abbreviation of its name.

Tunstall grew St Andrews, Fife , and attended the High School of Dundee ; Madras College in St Andrews . After leaving school, he learned to play the piano, flute and guitar, and gradually her singing voice developed its earthy individuality, "I am convinced that I learned to sing because someone gave me a tape of Ella Fitzgerald - she was my singing teacher. "In his mid-teens, KT had started writing his own songs "But I only went schmaltzy love nonsense. It was totally like a sappy love vomit. But I thought I was doing rock. "At 16, he started playing the guitar, alone with a book from a street musician.

Hungry for experiences and independence, won a scholarship to the Kent School in Connecticut, New England and soaked Concert The Grateful Dead and 10,000 Maniacs . He also spent time in a hippie commune, formed his first band, The Happy Campers , and provided all a series of small informal concerts. "By the second week of playing open-mic program and was" special guest from Scotland ! ', "He recalls. He then studied at the Royal Holloway College of London, where he used to give small concerts accompanied by his acoustic guitar in a student bar, under the name "Katie ." His style ranged from folk to pop, with touches of blues. "I managed to win the Battle Of The Bands (a competition for groups) with an accompanying on mandolin!." Tunstall

again St Andrews and began to hone their tastes with a style combinanción based James Brown , Lou Reed, Billie Holliday , Johnny Cash and PJ Harvey , and 20 years playing in indie bands, as Elia Drew and Tomoko , and its principal role as lyricist, and acting with class members Fence , including work in the Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra with King Creosote , who recently supported her in her British tour. He also lived with Gordon Anderson ( The Beta Band and The Aliens ), Who referred her song Funnyman album Drastic Fantastic . Also went on tour with the band Klezmer , Oi Va Voi , with whom he collaborated on his album Laughter Through Tears (2003). He

again London, where he eventually forged working relationships and secured treatment. She began writing projects with Swedish singer / producer Martin Terefe , the resident Orcadians London, Jimmy Hogarth and London Tommy D . With over a hundred songs in his pocket, went to work on his album debut with his new band and legendary producer of U2 , New Order and Happy Mondays , Steve Osborne flying.

The UK label Relentless Records Tunstall noticed and made an independent bid. However, Tunstall had decided to sign with an American label best known, and initially refused, but did not achieve its goal, finally signed by Relentless . Although his new label will recognize the potential of your voice and the quality of his songs, at that time KT "was not ready yet, so its co-founder Shabs Jobanputra and his manager decided to start a training process KT in order to extract maximum value for their good songs and their live performances before publishing new material.

recorded his first album in a small studio in the woods in Wiltshire . It was the home of a disabled person. The vocal booth was the ramp for wheelchair between her room and control room and could sing downhill or uphill. It was perfect, very raw. I had a small hut in the garden where all local groups rehearse. "I did not want carry too much equipment to study because when you have to be clever is when you get to make music interesting. Tom Waits said if you want something to sound like a battered cardboard box with a boot, then hit a cardboard box with a boot. In general, I am a positive person and reckless but I love the dark side of music and always want to explore. It's an album that sounds good but there is no doubt that there are hidden things. "

His first album, Eye to the telescope was launched in late 2004.'s Musical style KT varies from folk to pop. In Edinburgh and St Andrews played in a band called Red Light Stylus , which was considered one of the best bands in Fife . The remarkable first appearance Tunstall was a solo performance of Black horse and the cherry tree in the British TV show Later with Jools Holland . This performance was notable because it only had 24 hours to prepare because the artists scheduled for the occasion, the singer Nas canceled his performance. His performance caught the attention of many viewers, taking away ownership to other programs such as numbers The Cure, Embrace and The Futureheads . After the appearance on Later ... , Eye to the Telescope was launched, and went up to the number 3 on the music charts in Britain (in its first release peaked at 73) and was nominated in 2005 for Mercury Awards . The album went on sale in U.S. in February 2006.

The album was the creative result of a curious imagination. "My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories," he explains. "They're kitchen table songs, as a conversation between another person and myself. It's almost as if an alien sent to collect samples of human emotion and collect them all on one disc. "

Black horse and the cherry tree was one of the most successful singles and more radio broadcast in 2005 UK. In the British singles charts, reached number 28 and in the Billboard Hot 100 American, 20. The following releases were Other side of the world in UK and Suddenly I see in United States , and then Under the weather and Another place to fall , they got some success.

The qualitative leap in Tunstall United States occurred when American Idol contestant , Katharine McPhee chose Black horse and the cherry tree as his song of the week, with you got the song should be placed in the position 79 on the Billboard charts. Tunstall was very explicit in stating "the main problem I have about this is that I feel that this is totally under control ... les say what to say, tell them how to sing, nobody could talk show McPhee of my song, simply because nobody knew. " The finding showed Tunstall correct, because the song was suggested by the author and Billboard columnist , Fred Bronson. The song immediately jumped to number 23 on Billboard the week after McPhee's performance . Later declare "my fame as a musician in the U.S. is well cemented by Katharine McPhee , which is really interesting and fun for me because I have never been diplomatic talking about what I think about that kind of shows. "

KILLING JOKE

Gathered behind the spasm, seizures, and the final collapse of punk, the band Killing Joke British was at the end of last century one of the most clear examples of the ancient history of collective rituals and tribal dances, sense of rhythm as a vehicle of contagion but also as an individual need satisfaction aimed at flushing of the inner fire that drives create. Only in his case, that story was interpreted in a language near the rock, in which all these elements and functions are present in greater or lesser extent. Killing Joke also did reach the longed and complicated union between form and content of the story: if one of their songs is titled Tension , that's what it's like to listen, when Wardance sounds, it is noted the stakes are high.

The Killing Joke songs , bathed in a faintly metallic coating that would accentuate gradually attracted equally to fans of gothic rock, punk tempered, the sector aware of the rock art, pre-ravers young looking cane guitar ... Exactly the same would happen with Trent Reznor about ten years later. What did Nine Inch Nails was pick up the baton of a cult musicians came professing different ilk. If we quote the names of Metallica, Shellac , Moby , Jesus Lizard, Therapy? , Murder City Devils , Rammstein, Foo Fighters or Basque Akauzazte find that the only possible common denominator among them is its attraction to music Killing Joke. For Dave Grohl goes beyond the story because the battery went from fan paid to be part of the band in 2003 with his participation in the very remarkable, and very metal-album recorded this year. It was his third return, as in 1994 and had come together again after a hiatus of four winters in which they saw how the inheritance of his early compositions had great impact because Ministry , mainly. Pandemonium then released , attempt to update a proposal whose followers were making profitable too well. The first had occurred back in 1990 with Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed emotions after training hit rock bottom a couple of years ago when the publication of Brighter Than a Thousand Suns had shown to a group with few things to say, having missed the train and hardly recognizable in a record that had more than techno-pop of their previous impost industrial energy.

Killing Joke was created in 1979, in line at an unemployment office in the singer and keyboardist Jeremy "Jaz" Coleman met a friend and began to discuss their aspirations music. The friend gave Coleman had someone Coleman could complement his musical talent, and later took him to a flat in Notting Hill , London, where drummer Paul Ferguson , who played in Matt Stagger Band was waiting. According to Coleman , without speaking, the two realized they were destined to play music together, music that Ferguson would later describe as the "sound of the earth vomiting."

In order to deepen their musical ideas, Coleman Ferguson and placed an ad in a local music newspaper saying: "You want to be part of Killing Joke? Advertise total - Total Anonymity - Exploitation total. Soon after, he joined guitarist Kenneth "Geordie" Walker and bassist Martin "Youth" Glover , and they completed the band. Taking its name from a British phrase refers to a situation ironic or paradoxical event, started writing songs, performing in concerts and soon earned a reputation across London playing songs like boogie Malicious , Wardance , Pssyche , Turn to network , Nuclear boy, and even a cover of Bodies of Sex Pistols. According to Jaz , Killing Joke was formed with specific intentions: "define the exquisite beauty of the atomic age in terms of style, sound and form."

created their own label, Malicious Damage (which got distribution agreement with Island and then moved to EG Records ). In those early days, they sound like many bands, from punk, incorporating disparate elements. For Killing Joke , it's funk or dub reggae ( Turn to network). The EP Nervous system / network Turn to reached study John Peel, who fell in the group and led to radio play on more than one occasion. Quickly approached a more aggressive sound and dense, typical metal, Killing Joke (EG , 1980), a black and white album, anonymous, with an apocalyptic sonic boom, wrapped in an electronic tag and tribal drums, low pulse, and a unique sound of rhythm guitar. From it was extracted as a single song Change, which became a favorite of underground clubs on both sides of the Atlantic. "It's aggressive music," said Ferguson , "is not entertainment friendly ... we have our songs on the dance United States, and that pleases me. As for me, Killing Joke is dance music. I'm not entirely displeased with entering the album charts. I think it shows a great hope for the world. "

Killing Joke wrote all the songs on her next album, What's THIS for ...! ( EG , 1981) while in the study. According to Geordie this process was a little difficult, since the group was a year for the first disk material before it was actually recorded. Launched in late 1981, What's THIS for ...! shows us some more Killing Joke focused on developing his own sound. Of the seven minutes of Madness to Tension and The Fall of Because , the new album continued the prediction of Killing Joke the end of justification and reason, and return to a primitive man. The album also released the perverse humor Killing Joke. The tourist / wife watching a nuclear explosion and lyrics of songs like "I wonder who chose the color scheme? Is very nice!" Made the audience to wonder who was this anonymous group who surprised us with Follow the Leaders . In their concerts they agreed, in an unprecedented way, fans of both punk and heavy.

Controversy accompanied them. At the same time banning a concert by the band in Glasgow , NME journalists decided they had fascist overtones in his image. Suspicion and disgust have been targeted, although the group was a conscious provocation, based on their aesthetic provocative, if you have any affiliation, is leftist ideology. With it did nothing but criticize, by way of irony, the neoconservative world were coming.

Revelations (EG, 1982), third album, was produced by the German rock legend Connie Plank, and also benefited from the broadcast of John Peel . Another anonymous sonic boom, the album featured the popular song Empire, but also revealed many of the pressures under which it would put the label. Reached number 12 in the UK chart albums. Killing Joke

were unsure of their musical direction and faced with another daunting world tour, which made the group to crack. Coleman began to approach the occult and in the firm belief that the Apocalypse was near, went to Iceland where Geordie joined him, working both with the musicians of the group Theyr . Meanwhile, Youth and Big Paul formed their own group, Brilliant, probably the song of the B-side song Empire. However, before Brilliant could edit a single, Big Paul joined this group. The criticism intensified in the British music newspaper and Youth , Along with other musicians, finally released the single That's What Good Friends Are for , a clear reference to his former teammates. From Iceland , Jaz Brilliant labeled as a group that makes "music to make money" and dismissed both Youth and Paul . Just returned to UK , Youth was replaced by Paul Raven (perhaps best remembered for his men with four strings). Back to Plank , recorded a single ( Birds of a feather ) and EP ( Ha! ) with a performance held in Toronto .

Possibly spurred by the emergence of Brilliant , Jaz met Geordie and Big Paul , bassist Paul Raven . They toured Europe and United States in 1982, which allowed hardened Raven scenarios America. Several shows in Toronto were recorded during this tour and was released as an EP HA, Killing Joke live . Killing Joke Polydor signed then , what seemed an effort to attract more buyers artificial disc, a move that Jaz had criticized Youth. The result was Fire dances (EG, 1983), assuming that marked the first time that a photo of the band appeared as part of the album cover. Jaz proclaimed the album "the best in the history of Killing Joke " (comments that used to do in the launch of each new album) and Let's all go (to the fire dances) was his first single. The album contains a shift towards a more melodic form (although ironically the same load.) Coleman not feel the need of screaming at this stage you can hear singing, leading the group's music to their own formulation of the new wave. The album contained other gems, including and Frenzy Harlequin .

The group seemed to reach another difficult period in 1983 with the launch of the single Me or you in which the group seems to be asking, including chants of "woo hoo" in the case of the band or the audience who needs to change to increase their sales records.

After a brief silence, Killing Joke returned in 1984 with a pair of singles 12 "A new day and Eighties, which has more viewers than any of his other previous singles. Playing in front of large U.S. flags and Soviet Union, the group toured and appeared to be trying to project a new image with the use of coordinated teams around the black, and Geordie and Raven using large rubber boots and metal, such as those used Kiss.

Building on the success of Eighties, the group released Night time (EG , 1985), recorded in Berlin , which featured the song Love like blood (number 16 in England and 8 Netherlands), which boosted Killing Joke to again in the dance floors U.S. and Europe . With 8 rare tracks including the previously released as a single, Eighties, it appears the album more melodic keyboards and the finest guitar playing Geordie songs like Kings and Queens and Europe . Reached number 11 in the UK charts.

In its sixth full-length album, Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (EG , 1986), which is the name of a description in Japanese atomic explosion, Killing Joke let go of aggression and acquired love for the melody. Coleman took the absolute role of the album, taking the cover with his face. Although there is disagreement among fans and critics, the album is generally considered a major achievement of lyrical intensity and density. Successes like Adorations and Sanity had a modest success, while songs like Chessboards and Rubicon keep the faithful engaged.

The following work, by contrast, is the result of a chain of misunderstandings: Coleman wanted to record a solo album to pour obsessions and experimentation, helped by Geordie . As they were spending more than expected, the company Virgin Records / EG pushed for the disk appear under the name of the band, in what seemed an attempt to speed up the brand name for Killing Joke raise any revenue for the last time. Jaz had just rushed to record the tracks, and in 1988 Outside the gate was published. This is not quite like to Coleman, but the less I liked was the other musicians (and Raven Ferguson), who ended up leaving the group. The result is Outside the gate (1988), the most controversial album of those who have edited, with fans who hate him and others who consider him a genius. Although uneven, the album was underrated, and he displayed America, which contains a touch sarcastic in a country and a culture that seemed to be courting the last two albums, Outside the gate, or jump ahead One, which has likened the rap lyrical rhythms. The album appeared and disappeared, like Killing Joke . It filed a lawsuit with record companies for the album's release, draining the spirit of the group and cash.

diversion Killing Joke an apparent path of "merchantability" was fully demonstrated by the publication of The Courtauld Talks (1989), a recital of "spoken word" of Coleman helped by the minimalist music and Geordie Jeff Scantlebury, a result of Coleman conference in September 1987 at the Courtauld Institute of London outlining the thinking underlay the then unreleased album Outside the gate, trying on numerology and the occult.

The rest of that year was spent trying to get free from their agency management and record company. Coleman reached the point of nervous breakdown. In an attempt to collect a new contract and pay huge legal bills, The group embarked on a short U.S. tour playing in small clubs. It also brought a cast of new songs, new drummer ( Martin Atkins, former PIL, Ministry and Brian Brain ) and an unknown bass player, Dave "Taif" Ball ( which formed part of the band's live Lloyd Cole). Some British newspapers music originally announced that the new bass player was former The Smiths, Andy Rourke , but that was quickly dismissed or moved for unknown reasons. With a background low budget, the tour also included roadie and friend, Phil , and keyboardist John Bechdel . It sets left out of their last two albums, his early work concentrated and powerful they were writing new material.

They toured until August 1989, then going to burn to Germany. But those sessions were discarded, Taif left their jobs and rejoined Paul Raven. In 1990 the group signed a contract for an album with Noise Entertainment, a division German conglomerate BMG who thought they were buying the credibility of the alternative music market, and launched one of their best albums, Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed emotions (1990), is one of the albums decidedly rough and warlike band. "As a reflection of their desperate situation, the album is a storm of indignation, anger, sarcasm and contempt, in short, all the necessary ingredients for a great album." And it was real. There is no lip gloss and cream. Just crunching guitar, drums Atkins potent and Jaz yelling and screaming anyone who would listen. The group played some shows in Europe after the album's release, with Raven on bass. However, the smooth running of the group was only apparent. Coleman just emigrated, was established in New Zealand .

seemed the end of Killing Joke . With two strong personalities in the band, and Coleman Atkins, it was reported that tensions grew until the band dissolved. In what was widely regarded as a coup by Atkins to release the group Coleman, invited Atkins Raven to and Geordie , along with former drummer Big Paul , keyboardist Bechdel and singer Chris Connelly to meet with him and record a album for the label Atkins, Invisible , under the name Murder Inc. Recorded Minnesota, the album features inimitable guitar sound of Geordie and rhythms and Atkins Ferguson . It was published then, and the group disbanded soon after. The vanished without a tour group in support of the album.

In the following years, the group, though never officially split, saw its components pursuing other musical interests. Jaz Coleman released an album of popular Egyptian music influence, Songs from the victorious city , who recorded with Anne Dudley of Art of Noise . He also worked on his own symphonic classical pieces and moved to New Zealand . Geordie married and moved to the hometown of his wife, Detroit . He also auditioned for Faith No More to replace guitarist Jim Martin , but decided to pass up the opportunity. Paul Raven founded The Hellfire Club , and later joined the group metal New York, Pronk . Martin Atkins was busy touring and recording with his new band, Pigface .

1992 would be the beginning of the next phase of Killing Joke. This year, Virgin published the collection of the best of Killing Joke, Laugh ? I Nearly Bought one! Geordie was hired to ensure that the rights of the tracks were included. Geordie Youth called to see if they had old photos of the album cover. Since its passage through Killing Joke, Youth had recorded some albums with Brilliant (one of them Jimmy Cauty of The KLF ), and had become a producer after working with dance bands , techno and pop PM Dawn , Blue Nile, Crowded House and The Orb (which includes the former Killing Joke roadie , Alex Patterson ). The two began to record and, according to Geordie, Youth said "we should reform the band then." "I thought he was joking." Geordie handled two old songs remixed, Change and Wardance .

Soon, probably by the influence of Youth on the label, Killing Joke was signed by Zoo Entertainment, another division of BMG , and began working on a new album. Pandemonium was recorded and mixed during spring, summer and autumn of 1994 and in studies of York New Zealand, co-owned by Jaz, and Youth studies , Butterfly in Brixton . Youth With also in production, the album featured Geoff Dugmore on drums (although not compenente the band full time) and vocal tracks recorded at the King's Chamber in Great Pyramid in Egypt . With the merger of his old sound with a more metallic sound, the band enjoyed its greatest success with the song Millennium issued in major radio stations in the U.S. . They toured for much of 1994 and part of 1995, achieving a mix of old fans and younger ones who thought Killing Joke was a "new" band. Two years later

posted Democracy (1996), highly regarded, and, like the previous album, carrying a naked and raw sound. The album introduced the acoustic guitar and adopt a more appropriate sound for live performance.

belligerent attitude Coleman & Co. induced them to sue Nirvana a riff used in Come as you are, according to them, copied from that used in Eighties, but forgot about when Cobain committed suicide. Dave Grohl might have something to do, since it is a declared fan of the band, oddly enough, ended up working with them a little later. Following the publication of Democracy came a break, during which Coleman worked beside "classic": he became a composer for orchestras New Zealand and, more recently, the Czech Republic . In 2006 he was appointed composer in residence "for the orchestras of the European Union .

one hand, the romance of orchestral music, on the other, the anger unleashed in the Killing Joke shows . Are the two hemispheres of a brain artistic, in recent years seem to have gotten along well. Coleman still holds, with his inseparable Geordie, the group's artistic baton, halfway between Prague and London. In 2003, put into service its second self-titled album (Killing Joke , Zuma, 2003), with producer Andrew Gill . It was an album with lyrics more committed, referring to the Iraq War , government control and Armageddon. singles were extracted Loose cannon and Seeing network. Dave Grohl declared fan of the band, served as the battery during recording. They made their tour for the most complete of its history, U.S. , Europe and Australia . With drummer Ben Calvert , played two days at the Shepherds Bush Empire of London to commemorate the 25 anniversary of the band. The concert was published in XXV Gathering: The Band That Preys together stays together .

At the same time, his former label began to reissue the legendary albums of the eighties. But they do not give up the effort: Hosannas from the basements of hell ( Cooking Vinyl, 2006), metal-hardcore incarnation, was born in April 2006.

On October 20, 2007, Paul Raven died of heart attack during a recording session Geneva (Switzerland ). In his honor, Coleman composed a tribute to an English century ( The Night Raven, the tower and the cenotaph ).
