TONY BANKS

Anthony George Banks ( East Hoathly, Southern England , 1950), as a member of Genesis , has pioneered the use of synthesizers, as well as the use of keyboards like the Yamaha CP-70 and as an organist, notably the T-102 Hammond . Through most of the history of the band Banks was the main force in the songwriting, his ideas were often at the heart of his music, and often write lyrics too. Outside Genesis, Banks enjoyed modest success in his career of compositions for films, and very limited in his solo career.

Tony Banks was taught by his parents John and Nora very young to learn music. Banks finally developed his talent for the piano, which became the focus of his musical endeavors. In 1963, Banks entered the prestigious school of Charterhouse public school , just outside Godalming to continue his piano studies with interests ranging from classical music to pop.

While at Charterhouse , Banks met his classmate Peter Gabriel, who arrived there in the same period. Peter Gabriel Banks shared with his love of music, with particular passion in the soul artists of the era, including Otis Redding . Gabriel had ambition to make music, but a drummer was mediocre at best. The peculiar voice Gabriel young, however, proved to be very exceptional. They formed in 1966 The Garden Wall.

In early 1967, The Garden Wall merge with The Anon , of which his colleagues were part Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford . They recorded some demos with Peter Gabriel on drums and vocals, Tony Banks on piano, Anthony Phillips on guitar and Mike Rutherford on bass. This new band managed to get a copy on cassette demos to Jonathan King, a former pupil of Charterhouse , who had achieved a recent success in the charts of UK with Everybody's Gone to the Moon . King heard the tape, as I was driving home that day and liked it, especially the voice of singer Peter Gabriel . King later signed with the young, and yet unnamed band, a publishing contract in 1967. The band enlisted the help of drummer Chris Stewart , to Peter Gabriel to focus on being a singer, and with it the touch line was completed.

The band, now called Genesis , demos recorded additional non King satisfy, so the band returned to record a song in the vein of one of the bands current fashion, King favorite, The Bee Gees called The silent sun . The song would restore the King interest by the group, and would later be released as their first single in 1968.

After releasing two singles, The silent sun and A winter's tale , followed by the band's first album From Genesis to Revelation in March 1969, and limited commercial success Jonathan King, who wanted a singles group orientation towards progressively felt frustrated by the group's tendency towards long compositions, and ended up terminating their relationship with Genesis .

Genesis was the next year writing new material, preparing presentations, live in small venues in universities and technical colleges. During this period the band agreed on the need to move from a softer acoustic sound to a more powerful electric sound, backed by a spectacular direct. The result caught the attention of Tony Stratton-Smith , who hired Genesis for the Charisma Records label in April 1970 .

After recording their second album was no change in the band, leaving the co-founder Anthony Phillips , being briefly replaced by John Mayhew and later output Peter Gabriel, after which Tony developed the idea of recording a solo album, but after the dissolution of the doubts about the future of Genesis , his ideas became the band's first album post-Gabriel, A trick of the tail .

For the album
Wind and wuthering (1977), Genesis met the need to find a drummer for the book tour, being the chosen Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa and The Mothers , Weather Report). During mixing of the second live album, Seconds Out , Steve Hackett announced his departure from the band, assuming functions Michael Rutherford bass and guitar, making Genesis in a trio formation with which held more than 15 years.

Collins, Banks and Rutherford , again the studio to record ... And Then There Were Three ... , which involved a change of style ROGRESS RockPOS group to pop-oriented radio stations it did plunge into the mainstream, aided by his single Follow you follow me .

With the departure of Steve Hackett , another guitarist was needed for the tour, the band choosing Daryl Stuermer, known for his work with great jazz artists as George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty . Despite the chart success, some of his supporters felt that leave their progressive rock style for the sake of commerciality somehow supposed to be sold. Nevertheless, the band continued with this line and artistic vision, achieving great commercial success. After the tour of 1978 Genesis took a breather and its members began working on alternative projects and personal.

During this hiatus, Tony Banks began work on his first solo album, A curious feeling (1979), which was also named number 21 on the UK charts . For his debut was with the drummer in Genesis tours, Chester Thompson and Kim Beacon on lead vocals. The rest of the instruments was carried out by Banks . The album, co-produced by former Genesis producer, David Hentschel , sounds very similar to Genesis , but did not attract enough audience. The letters were based on the science-fiction story Flowers for Algernon but Tony changed some of the letters.

year before Tony had written the music for the film The Shout with Mike Rutherford . Never released as an album, but Tony used the focus of the composition to From the undertow in A curious feeling. Tony was quite disappointed with the lack of success of the album because I thought A curious feeling was, "more than three previous albums Genesis."

Genesis regrouped to post Duke in April 1980, which was their biggest hit to date, and that featured two popular singles, and Misunderstanding Turn It On Again . Subsequently published Abacab (1981), first Top 10 in U.S. , And the singles that were released No reply at all, Man on the corner and Abacab, and direct Three sides live.

Upon completion of the Abacab tour , Tony Banks returned to the studio to record their second album, The fugitive (1982). For this project Banks needed a new drummer and contacted the session respected professional Steve Gadd, who was the first to go to England to do session work with former Beatle , Ringo Starr, joined in the study Banks for three songs on the album. Other musicians included on the project were the guitarist for Genesis tours, Daryl Stuermer, known as the session Mo Foster and Tony Beard and Andy Duncan on drums. Banks took the lead vocals in The Fugitive with keyboards and synthesizers. Like the previous album, The fugitive and singles, as This is love, there were considerable commercial success. That same year

saw the return of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett for a concert in England , which was not recorded, but the circulation of a bootleg recording of the show.

In 1983, the soundtrack to the Warner Brothers film , The Wicked Lady, starring Faye Dunaway , was composed by Tony Banks . The songs were recorded by Banks at home and were mixed in the studios of Genesis , The Farm , other items made by the National London Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Stanley Black musical arrangements and orchestration by Christopher Palmer . The film did not work well in theaters, which probably could be attributed to that, despite being recorded digitally, the soundtrack to The wicked lady has never been officially re-released on compact disc. In fact, remains the only solo project of Genesis members that has never been re-released in digital format.

In 1983 he published his Genesis self-titled album, which won four platinum albums United States and gave the band their first hit single in the country, That's all . The album also extracted other hit singles, reaffirming the status of superstars Genesis. After the end of his promotional tour in late 1984, the band took another break and its members are dedicated to their solo projects. In the spring of 1984, Tony was commissioned to write music for a Hollywood film , 2010 - The year we made contact , the sequel to 2001 - Space Odyssey , but finally, after developing it over 6 months, he rejected his work, but was able to recycle and use their music for the soundtrack of Starship in 1985.

During the third break of Genesis, Tony Banks published Soundtracks in 1985. The album was a compilation of music written and composed by Banks for movies L'Orca and the outlaws and Quicksilver . For the most part is instrumental, appearing only three songs with vocals, Shortcut to somewhere with Fish, Marillion frontman , You call this victory with Jim Diamond and Lion of symmetry with Toyah Willcox . Focused around parts epic instrumentals like Redwing suite (which had appeared in the film 2010: The year we made contact , but has remained unused since it appeared in Quicksilver ). When the single Shortcut to somewhere not enter the charts, the album quickly faded into obscurity.

In 1986 Invisible touch album reached No. 3 on the Billboard albums. And extrordinario was a success for the group, besides getting to be the first group had five Top 5 singles U.S. the same album. Later that year, Billboard Magazine honored to Genesis and its members have the most singles of the group and as artists originating from the same group in the Hot 100 Chart ( Steve Hackett GTR with , Peter Gabriel, Michael Rutherford with Mike & The Mechanics , Phil Collins and Genesis , they all had singles in very high positions on lists).

After the successful tour of 1986/87 promotion Invisible touch, its members went to pursue their alternative projects. Following the key to the success of his colleague Genesis, Mike Rutherford , which opted to form a fixed band called Mike & The Mechanics , Banks thought a similar strategy to help your project to have a largest trade show. For this project, enlisted Banks Alistair Gordon and Klimek Jayney vocalists (two vocalists, like the Rutherford model ). Also part of the training producer and guitarist Steve Hillage and known session bassist Pino Palladino . With this training, in 1989, Tony Banks released his next solo album, Bankstatment . Despite being much more adaptable to radio stations that his previous work as singles Throwback , Raincloud and I'll be waiting not get brand recognition. After this album, Atlantic Records terminated the contract with Tony Banks seal America.

After the lukewarm response to the draft Bankstatement and sign a new contract with Giant Records (which was, as Atlantic, WEA subsidiary seal), Tony Banks decided to release his solo album Still in 1992 under his own name. The process of negotiating a new contract with the label in the U.S. caused the publication in this country is delayed almost a year on its market in Europe in 1991.

To Still, Banks sought the help of vocalists Fish Jayney and Klimek, along with Andy Taylor and Nick Kirshaw . Tony Banks produced an album more pop-oriented, commercially available, with singles like I want to change the score and The gift . Unfortunately, once again, the solo effort Banks failed to commercial success.

4 years had passed since the last publication of Genesis, when they released We Can not Dance (1991), which was another great success for the band, with singles like I can not dance , Hold on my heart, Never to time , Jesus He Knows Me and of mine is not in U.S. and Tell me why also Europe . At the conclusion of his book tour in 1992, the band released its fourth live album, The way we walk, including two volumes sold individually The shorts, with songs more pop-oriented, and managed to gold in U.S. and The longs , more epic material of the band (and a duet on drums from Phil Collins and Chester Thompson ). Also released in VHS and laserdisc, and video from the tour on DVD in 2001.

Tony In 1995 he made his second solo attempt to cover a band name. Strictly Inc. was the title of Tony CD recorded with vocalist Wang Chung, Jack Hues . The music was modern sounds, melodies and traditional elements pegadixas music Banks. The album featured one of the best solos Banks, a piece 17-minute call An island in the darkness . Strictly Inc. was another commercial failure.

The latest publication is titled Banks Seven: A Suite for orchestra , which can be included in the classical genre. Banks compositions are interpreted by London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mike Dixon , and the same Banks plays piano on three tracks. It was published worldwide by Naxos Records .
