Whatever Happened To Kristin Kreuk

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

Broken Social Scene are less a traditional banda and more an amorphous collective. founded by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the band has expanded to include an ever-changing cast of more than 20 people, all friends of the Toronto music scene , like singer Leslie Feist and alt-country singer Jason Collett as well as members of Stars, Metric , Dears, Do Make Say Think , The American Analog Set and Land of Talk.

The band rejects the label of "supergroup", based on the size or the ubiquity of its members, claiming that the indie scene each of its members are involved in more than one project. The band's sound could be considered a combination of all rspectivos musical projects of its members, and is sometimes classified as baroque pop. It is characterized by a large number of different sounds, with orchestras, with guitars, trumpets, horns, violins, unusual structures of some songs, and an experimental production style, and sometimes chaotic, of David Newfeld, who produced the second and third albums.

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning , met at a club in Toronto . Drew , from KC Accidental and Canning of By Divine Rigth and Len wanted to finance the recording of much of his first album. Spent the next few years honing an atmospheric rock sound in his hometown of Toronto , Canada and the dynamics work very well.

Feel Good Lost was their debut album in 2001. Recorded in the basement of the house Drew, is essentially the work of Drew and Canning , but as the recordings progressed, the couple decidión involve their friends, a rotating cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's partner in Do Make Say Think, Charles Spearin , was added to the band as well as Evan Cranley ( Stars), James Shaw , Emily Haines (Metric ) and Bill Priddle . However, when they played in actions to promote the album, Drew and Canning found it difficult to achieve an entertaining show based on an instrumental album as it was Feel Good Lost.

"It was really a social setting, we all saw, we spent time with them," says Drew . "There are so many bands in place, that's how we kept our personal lives: we got together, we played at performances, going to shows, we saw in concert the other."

A year later, in autumn 2002, published You forgot it in people through Paper Bag Records, an album with predominant sound guitars, which meant the group jump in the Canadian scene. Broken Social Scene had become a group of 11 members to flavor their live performances with lyrics and vocals. Jason Collett, Andrew Whiteman , Billy Dagg, Justin Peroff, John Crossingham , Amy Millan (Stars ) and Leslie Feist joined this band bombastic, orchestrated sound and critics loved the sound.

"Even before he published it in Forgot people, the public saw us in Toronto shows as a band that was developing rapidly, "says Canning ." But that's only because we had a very large base of friends. There were so many components in the group that was not so difficult to fill a room with two or three hundred of our friends. And it grew, because word of mouth among friends was growing interest for us. "

This album, a collection of experimental pop songs, eclectic and creative, yet accessible, became the band's commercial success and was highly acclaimed by critics, which made quickly escalate the group's popularity: "We had to go to many interviews, photo shoots, radio presentations, live performances, video sessions, claims all that, in theory, pushed forward the group's career, and you represent as a 'banda' in the traditional sense, "lamented Canning.

also collaborated on the album Priddle, Jessica Moss , Brodie West, Susannah Brady and Ohad Benchetrit , although his work most credited well as guest musicians as members. For the tour that accompanied the album the band consisted in Drew, Canning , Peroff , Whiteman and Jason Collett , plus any other that was available for accompany them on a specific presentation. Amy Millan and Gentleman Reg also joined for some shows.

You forgot it in people and was known among indie cohorts and plans for a U.S. launch in by label Arts & Crafts was scheduled for next summer. A surprise, however, coincided with those plans in spring 2003 when Broken Social Scene won a Juno for Best Alternative Album of the Year by You forgot it in people .

A collection of b-sides remixes, Bee Hives was released in the spring of 2004.

Amidst constant touring, they released their third LP, Broken Social Scene in October 2005, with further contributions from K-os , Jason Tait and Murray Lightburn . The script also credited to drive several new faces as part of Broken Social Scene . The album, which, in the words of Canning took them a couple of years of work, I meant high costs and rang around the world and is regarded by critics as warm overestimated. A limited edition EP, To be you and me , also printed with the album. It was the first time that David Newfeld , who had produced his records, appeared as a band member list.

This Drew says reflects the business-centric era of the band represents. "It just became a battle more than fun," Drew conjecture. "You talk more than act, going to interviews, discuss the new strategic mission, plan and talk about music to do the next few years, but not play music, and when you do, you feel stuck because you repeat the same songs every night. It really becomes a toll to pay to abuse your original passion, which is the main reason you started playing in the band originally. "

They launched a U.S. tour with Feist later the album's release. were presented to the Juno Awards 2006 with Ibi dreams of pavement and again won the award for Best Alternative Album their self-titled album.

In 2007 Kevin Drew published the first installment of the Broken Social Scene presents solo, called Spirit if ... , followed by another Brendan Cannin g called Something for all of us ... , with appearances in two other band members.

"We wanted a different brand ediciión we built this army of women, singers, strings and wind with 17 people on stage," said Drew of this innovative concept. "We wanted something else, somewhere that we could publish music for movies or songs of atmosphere, free from this tour-de-force that Broken Social Scene had become in that period of 5 years."

In May 2009, published by Arts & Crafts in partnership with Anansi Press the book This book is Broken , written by the editor of weekly Eye , Stuart Berman, who confessed his personal commitment to the band in the opening chapters. The book includes covers, concert posters and photographs of amateur and professional group. Most of the narrative is based on interviews with band members and people related to it. The book has been described as "a visual and oral history, not just Broken Social Scene, but by the Toronto ."

In May 2010 they returned with their fifth album rock Forgiveness record, recorded in Soma , Chicago, produced by John McEntire , and Toronto in studies of Sebastian Grainger and James Shaw . Amy Millan, Emily Haines and Leslie Feist recorded a song together, assuming the first time in the history of the band that all three have come together in the same song (although in reality the recorded at different times).

"It's totally different," said Drew , the magazine Pitchfork "rock sound in a high-capacity stadium. We really have nothing to prove. Many bands have surgdo in the last five years and is sometimes called into question its relevance. But when everything clicks into place, you continue with your line of work. "
